Welcome to my Substack
Introduction
An introduction to my Substack or an introduction to why I’m writing, or is it "writing"? Everything you’ll read here will be voice-recorded and then transcribed via AI. I’ll take a little time to strip out the filler and then post. I’m hoping this reduces a barrier to posting and that a little more of my personality will be received with this method, as my writing traditionally has been matter of fact. Anyway, here it goes.
I’ve been searching for a medium to express myself. I feel that I have a lot to share, and I don't feel like any of the social media platforms I use really suit my needs for what I have to offer, or they don’t overly lock me into their universe.
In the future, I believe that YouTube would be a good medium, and I’d also like to look at podcasting to talk through things. So, that’s where I would like to take this eventually. But as Gary Vaynerchuk says, ‘sell now, improve later’. While I currently have nothing to sell you, I have a lot to share. And I think that instead of waiting for the perfect time or the perfect medium to share something, I'm just going to get going and see where this goes.
Topics
I will be sharing my thoughts on my favourite subjects, which are self-improvement, diabetes, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, nutrition, and strength training. Strength training and nutrition are my profession, diabetes is my USP, and BJJ & general self-improvement are two passions of mine.
The Content
Theorists and Practitioners. I plan to write the majority of the content referencing experience and forgo a lot of theoretical frameworks. For example, take goal setting. I've been involved in self-improvement for a very long time, successfully setting and achieving goals. While I have read about the subject over the years, I've learned from doing. An example I often give to my new coaches: Are you going to learn more about the application of dieting from studying diets or following a diet?
Now, this isn’t to discredit theorists. I have a stronger interest in theoretical models and concepts than most because I'm curious, and I’ve been working primarily as a fitness educator for the previous 5-6 years.
But theory doesn’t immediately help the end user. It takes significantly longer to write about, and the writing wouldn’t be my work as I’m not conducting primary research.
Thanks for making it this far. I’ve got some recordings started on self-improvement/goal-setting coming up soon.
